Let's give Jennifer "A Fighter's Chance"!

Dear Shane and A Fighter’s Chance,

I am writing you to ask your organization to help my Sister, Jennifer Ellis Moulder. Jennifer is 24 years old and the Mother of two beautiful children. Jaidan Grace is 2 years old and Aaron Lee is 6 months. This story began in January 2002 when she was the age of 17. She had a tragic car accident that almost cost her life. After a two month stay in the hospital (the majority of that in a coma), Jennifer was released. The Doctors said she would be handicapped, but she came through it with seemingly no major problems. She went on to lead a normal life, got married and had her two children. After Aaron was born in 2009, she began to have medical problems. We lost our dear Daddy April 2009, suddenly to a heart attack. Jennifer’s condition worsened, but we thought maybe some of it might be stress. June 2009, after having gone to the Cherokee Nation Hospital on various occasions, Jennifer finally went to a local hospital. Having no medical insurance played a major role in her not being able to go beforehand. The Doctors of Sparks Medical Center began to do extensive tests on her and found many major problems. They found that all her major organs were shoved together due to her previous car accident. Her gallbladder was inflamed to twice its size and was removed with a very extensive surgery. They found she had cirrhosis of the liver and ulcerative colitis. She was released and told she would not qualify for a partial liver, and would need to be put on the liver donor’s list.

The events that have happened since that time are hard to put in words. Cherokee Nation has agreed to help with Doctor visits and some of her medications, but the Doctor has to be their choice and medications are very limited. She has filed for Social Security Disability and continues to wait to hear anything from them. We are told once and if she is deemed eligible, it will take up to 2 years to receive state medical. We are now in a gray area as far as the donor’s list, and I will explain what I mean by this. Cherokee Nation has convinced a Doctor in OK City to get her started on the donor’s list, and told them she is currently waiting on her SS Disability and state medical. Cherokee Nation will not pay for any of the transplant, as it is not in their policy. She will continue to be evaluated every 6 months to see if she is in complete liver failure and is ready for a transplant. Our dilemma is this: If she gets ready for a transplant and we do not have insurance, she will not receive it. The Doctors have told her it could 7 years more or less before she will need the transplant but it is not certain. This is why they will evaluate her every 6 months. They do not know how long it will be for sure. Our other dilemma is her colon disease that has not had an exact diagnosis. It is currently not under control and we have made four trips to the ER since her release in June. Her condition with this disease is very serious. Symptoms she battles daily are pain, nausea and fever. She currently needs a very expensive blood test, to actually show if this is ulcerative colitis or crohns disease, so they can make sure the treatment they are giving her is the correct one. We would love to be able to take her to a “good” Doctor; one like would reside at the Mayo Clinic, as this disease continues to make her almost too sick to care for her small children. Our family has helped with the children, but Jennifer wants to be the one to care for them; however, her sickness makes it very difficult. As her Sister, I have tried to encourage her it will all be fine and try to comfort her when she is crying and worried about not getting to raise her babies but when you know you will die without proper intervention it is hard to cope. Jennifer has kept her hopes up, yet sometimes it is hard to convince her when it is obvious that really, money is the key. It is the key to good Doctors and the right medicine. When I look at what your organization stands for and how you believe everyone deserves a fighting chance it makes me feel certain you are the one who can help us. Jennifer is and has always been a fighter and I want to see her win this match.

I received this e-mail today from Kellie and have spoken with her. A good friend (Brian Foster) of the organization and a member of the HIT Squad has previously donated the gloves and shirt he wore in UFC 103 to her. They brought $1000. To receive the medical treatment she needs she will require many more thousands than that. I would speculate in the hundreds of thousands. That is a tall order but that is OK with me I have never liked to climb hills; give me a mountain. I didn’t create this organization to climb hills anyway.

Imagine if a 30,000 people gave $10 dollars? Those are really realistic numbers aren’t they?

Can you imagine living day to day thinking it’s a real possibility that you may not live long enough to raise your children? Could you remain hopeful during trials of this magnitude? I say it would be hard for any of us. But I also say that it is our duty while we are on this Earth to love our brothers and sisters through times like this and do our part to help them fight their fight.

When I read Jennifer’s story I see a fighter. I see a fighter that not only made it through a wreck she shouldn’t have but fought her way out of a coma with no permanent disability. Now she is fighting her toughest opponent, she is fighting an opponent that doesn’t want to claim a title or a belt but one that wants to claim her life. I have based my life and this organization on the premise that no matter how unevenly match the fight is an individual always has and deserves a fighter’s chance.
